Appearance:

The southern flying squirrel is a mouse-like gray color. Averaging only about two ounces, they are the smallest of New York’s squirrels. Somewhat misnamed, flying squirrels do not actually fly, but rather glide. By extending their feet, they cause the large flaps of skin found along the sides of their bodies to stretch tight, forming a wing-like structure.

Southern flying squirrels eat seeds, nuts, berries, lichens, fresh leaves and flowers.

Reproduction:

Southern flying squirrels experience two peaks of reproduction annually, with mating occurring once in late winter (February and March) and again in summer (June and July), with individual females reproducing during one or both of these periods each year. Litters may be as large as seven pups, although the average size is three.
